4/12: “Why Children’s Books”

Hey, Virginia! Did a children's book change your life? Do you have special childhood memories attached to a certain book?

There is a wonderful exhibit coming to Richmond Public Library in April that explores the role of children's books in our lives. "Why Children's Books: Inspiring Generations" will feature essays from many notable Richmonders including Shaka Smart, Michael Rao, Alex Nyerges, Jack Spiro, Mayor Dwight Jones, Tim Kaine, Anne Holton, Jason Mraz, and many more (including me). These essays are personal stories from all over Richmond on children's books that make a real difference. Each story illustrates the power of children's books and their ability to inspire us.

Guess what book I chose from my childhood? Alvin Schwartz's one and only "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark."

The exhibit will be displayed at the Main Library beginning April 12th and will be up until May 29th. The essays will also be available to view at RPL branches during the month of September. "Why Children's Books" was organized by the Friends of the Richmond Public Library, a volunteer-based group that supports library programs across our city.

9/1: Reading of The Penalty at The Kennedy Center

My new play "The Penalty" will be given a developmental reading at The Kennedy Center in part of their 11th Annual Page to Stage Festival.

The Kennedy Center hosts its eleventh annual Page-to-Stage festival, featuring more than 40 D.C.-area theater companies. This three-day event offers free readings and open rehearsals of plays and musicals being developed by local, regional, and national playwrights, librettists, and composers.

Here's a synopsis for "The Penalty":

New York City. 1920. A legless beggar pleads with the oncoming foot-traffic for spare change. Barely a nickel comes his way. But what these pedestrians don’t know is—this deformed derelict at their heels is none other than Blizzard, kingpin to the seedy underbelly of the Lower East Side. With an army of dancing girls at his beck and call, Blizzard is hell-bent on executing his master plan: Get his revenge against the prominent doctor who left him in this condition—and against the city that could’ve cared less. Enter the good doctor’s daughter, Sofie, an artist living in the LES. When she asks our vengeful vagrant to pose for a new portrait, completely unaware of Blizzard’s history with her father, the stage is set for a showdown between this trio.

Three people. Four legs. One game of revenge.

Inspired by the novel “The Penalty” by Gouverneur Morris, and its film adaptation written by Charles Kenyon and directed by Wallace Worsley.

"The Penalty" is a commissioned piece by The Apothetae, along with Dixon Place. The Apothetae is a company dedicated to the production of full-length plays about the "Disabled Experience." They have been invited to The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. to workshop four of their new original works at the Page to Stage Festival this coming September.

3/11: Commencement/Pumpkin Pie Show: RIP Red Room

The Pumpkin Pie Show bids a bittersweet farewell to one of the theatres it grew up in: Horse Trade's very own beautiful shoebox… The Red Room.

In a double-bill of some of our greatest hits, we pay our respects to one of our earliest venues in NYC sadly going the way of all those beautiful black boxes in the sky.

At 7 PM, Hanna Cheek will bring her no holds barred performance of COMMENCEMENT. See the show SEE Magazine says "... will leave you wringing your hands in helpless empathy."

At 8:30 PM, we will burn down the very walls of this theatre with our final Pumpkin Pie Show in the space. Nothing will be left of the stage once we're done. Watch us perform stories that got the neighbors calling the police. With performances by Chapman, Hanna Cheek, Abe Goldfarb, and special surprise guests from Pumpkin Pie Show's sordid past.

The Red Room, 85 East 4th Street, btn 2nd and 3rd Ave. Directly above the KGB Bar.

4/5: Reading at Stampede Lab!

I've been invited to participate in Elephant Run District's upcoming Stampede Lab, a "...curated evening of indie theater works, where artists from Off Off’s heritage mix with the people making it happen today." Here's what the website says:

"3 downtown theater companies present up to 15 minutes of soon-to-be produced pieces. Smart, daring, funny, challenging, raw and focused. In between there are short interviews, conversations and trivia. No lame talk-backs, no excruciating soap boxes and no rambling work. The Chain Theatre in LIC is a brand new performance space, and Elephant Run District is thrilled to welcome them into the indie community with a Stampede featuring some of the best and brightest people working today."

I'll be test-running a new story that might (or might not) make it into this year's Pumpkin Pie Show. You may be the ones to decide this story's fate, so come hear if it's any good…

The Chain Theatre is located at 21-28 45th Road, LIC, steps from the 7 Train and close to the G, E & M Trains. Show begins at 8pm. Admission is freeeeeeee.

5/7: Book Release: Homeroom Headhunters

At long last! The long-awaited release of book one in The Tribe Trilogy… Homeroom Headhunters! Pick it up at your local bookstore or here at Amazon: http://amzn.to/VdhauD

School is in session, and today's lesson is how to stay alive. Spencer Pendleton better take notes. He'll have to learn the Law of Claw and Fang to survive not just the bullies, but those who bully the bullies: the Tribe, a group of academic headhunters who don't play by anyone's rules except their own. They live off cafeteria food and wield weapons made out of everyday school supplies. They've made Greenfield Middle their hunting ground… and they're looking for new blood.

With a darkly candid sense of humor, author Clay McLeod Chapman reveals the wilder side of middle school, where students embrace their inner animal and go native.

Linda and Robert Schmier, Executive Producers
HOSTAGE SONG, Thu, 7:30pm, 6/20/13 ($15-20)
by Clay McLeod Chapman & Kyle Jarrow

In this remarkably original rock musical, a man and woman are blindfolded and bound. Jennifer is a journalist who was kidnapped at a check-point. Jim is a contractor working for the Pentagon. We are never told exactly when or where the events take place, but the details strongly suggest a current conflict involving America. Slumped in an empty cell, Jennifer and Jim pass the time by playing games or exchanging reminiscences about their families and the turbulent circumstances that have brought them together.

Special guest Hanna Cheek performing a piece by Clay McLeod Chapman From the Greeks up through the Elizabethans, western culture believed different bodily fluids were linked to fundamental personality types. 1/29-2/1: Hostage Song in Wisconsin!

Hostage Song returns! This time in Madison, Wisconsin. Music Theatre of Madison strives to challenge, educate and enrich by performing lesser known pieces that illustrate unique issues, ideas and subject matter.

Music and Lyrics by Kyle Jarrow. Book by Clay McLeod Chapman. Directed by Catie O'Donnell.

In an unspecified time and place, Jim and Jennifer are hostages, blindfolded and awaiting their fate. In an effort to distract themselves from their inevitable doom, they invent a life together beyond prison walls. As the reality of their demise becomes clearer, the fantasy becomes more vivid. Stunning rock music leads the story forward as the two grapple in the dark for the last bit of love they will ever know.

MTM's production will be only the fourth staging of this musical, but in New York and Chicago it has been deemed “breathtaking”, “haunting” and “devastatingly poignant.” HOSTAGE SONG is not to be missed, for it takes the unconventional musical, and MTM, to a whole new level.

Hostage Song in London!

The European premiere of a new musical

“I've spent the entire week watching old home movies. All of Jim's birthday parties. Trips to Disney Land. Trips to the beach. Christmas dinners. Anniversary parties. All the way back to our prom. What I don't have is his beheading. None of the networks will send me a copy, no matter how much I beg. Even if he is my husband – no one will let me see.”

The European premiere of Clay McLeod Chapman and Kyle Jarrow’s indie rock musical Hostage Song. Hostage Song is a subversive, high-velocity Off-Off Broadway indie rock musical from New York artists Clay McLeod Chapman and Kyle Jarrow. In an unspecified time and place, Jim and Jennifer are hostages, blindfolded and awaiting their fate. In an effort to distract themselves from their inevitable demise, they forge a relationship while trying to let go of the images of their loved ones. As the reality of their predicament becomes clearer, the fantasy becomes more vivid. Stunning rock music propels the story forward as the two take refuge in music, memory and each other, grappling in the dark for the last bit of love they will ever know.

Lovecraft in the Cemetery!

OBSCURA SOCIETY NYC: LOVECRAFT IN BROOKLYN - A MOONLIT MAUSOLEUM READING

Join us at historic Green-Wood Cemetery for an intimate reading of H.P. Lovecraft's The Horror at Red Hook, followed by cocktails in the Suydam family mausoleum.

For tickets and info, click here: http://bit.ly/1mbzvPP

Once a resident of nearby Brooklyn Heights, Lovecraft used his surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods as the setting and inspiration for some of his most celebrated and macabre writings. Monday, July 21, the New York Obscura Society cordially invites you to join us for a candle-lit reading of H.P. Lovecraft's The Horror at Red Hook in its entirety. We'll be navigating our way through historic Green-Wood's winding pathways and elaborate memorials by lantern light, featuring several of the cemetery's most atmospheric locations along the way. Our evening exploration will culminate with a private cocktail reception by the Suydam mausoleum, typically locked and off-limits to the public.

Featuring local authors and enthusiasts of all things esoteric Clay McLeod Chapman and Bess Lovejoy along with historian Mitch Waxman and craft cocktails provided by the East Village's soon to be opened Lovecraft Bar, join us for an exclusive opportunity to see some of Green-Wood's most dramatic and rarely accessed burial spaces while indulging in the writing of one of horror literature's greatest authors in the very cemetery grounds he once walked.

THIS IS A SMALL, INTIMATE EVENT AND TICKETS WILL SELL FAST.

Monday, July 21, 8 - 10:30pm
Tickets: $60. Cocktails will be included in the ticket price.

We'll be meeting at 8pm at Green-Wood Cemetery's west entrance, located at the intersection of 9th Avenue and 20th Street, Brooklyn, NY. This is not the main entrance associated with the cemetery, please check your directions before heading out. There will be no admittance through the cemetery's 5th Avenue entrance.

Please be on time, the gates will be locked behind us shortly after our arrival and will remain locked until the conclusion of our event.

“With the trembling voice of Vincent Price and the sinister presence of Boris Karloff, Clay McLeod Chapman… uses the macabre to explore the humanity of his characters and reveal an almost spiritual side to the horrific. ” – The New York Times

Celebrating its second decade of performances, The Pumpkin Pie Show is a literary fist in the face. Part storytelling session, part boxing match, part shamanistic ritual, The Pumpkin Pie Show has established itself as an all-points artistic hodgepodge of theatre and literature. The goal is to strip away the extraneous periphery of sets and costumes to put laser focus on the text and the performance itself, conjuring up an atmosphere of “creating something out of nothing,” as well as focusing on the ethereal connective tissue between the one telling the story and the audience.

THE BOY at SXSW

THE BOY is a feature adaptation of our award-winning short “Henley,” which I co-wrote with director and frequent collaborator Craig Macneill. Our script is based off the chapter “The Henley Road Motel” from my novel “Miss Corpus.”

THE BOY was produced by SpectreVision (Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller, and Elijah Wood) and Chiller Films. The film stars David Morse, Rainn Wilson, Jared Breeze, Bill Sage, Mike Vogel, Zuleikha Robinson, David Valencia, and Aiden Lovekamp.

THE BOY is set in the summer of 1989. 9-year-old Ted Henley (Jared Breeze) and his father John (David Morse) are the proprietors of The Mtn. Vista Motel, a crumbling resort buried in the mountains of the American West. Since Ted's mother left, John has drifted into despondency—becoming a living ghost, haunting the motel—leaving Ted to fend for himself. In this isolation, unchecked by the bounds of parenting, Ted’s darker impulses begin to manifest. The arrival of a mysterious drifter, William Colby (Rainn Wilson), captivates young Ted and the two form a unique friendship—setting the stage for Ted’s final, unnerving metamorphosis. THE BOY is a chilling, intimate portrait of a 9-year-old sociopath's growing fascination with death.

Here are our screening times and locations:

Saturday, March 14th, 3:45pm, Alamo Ritz
Sunday, March 15th, 7:00pm, Rollins Theatre at Long Center

THE BOY
2015, Chiller Films, 105 min, USA, Dir: Craig William Macneill
Ted Henley (Jared Breeze) lives with his depressed dad (David Morse) in an isolated desert motel, with little to occupy his time other than removing roadkill from the nearby highway. When a mysterious drifter (Rainn Wilson) checks in, the boy’s fascination with death accelerates in this disturbing portrait of a 9-year-old sociopath. “It's great, it's creepy, it's got a jet-black third act that'll have you squirming in your seat, and just about everything - from the cast and the script to the set design and the cinematography - works.” - Scott Wampler, Badass Digest.

THE PUMPKIN PIE SHOW: LABOR PAINS

STORIES WRITTEN BY CLAY MCLEOD CHAPMAN. PERFORMANCES BY CLAY MCLEOD CHAPMAN & HANNA CHEEK

SEPTEMBER 24 – OCTOBER 10 @ UNDER ST. MARKS

FRIGID New York @ Horse Trade will present the seventeenth annual presentation of The Pumpkin Pie Show, with stories written by master storyteller Clay McLeod Chapman and performances by Chapman and downtown superstar Hanna Cheek.

The production will run September 24-October 10 at UNDER St. Marks (94 St. Marks Place between 1st Avenue and Avenue A) with performances Thursday through Saturday at 8pm.Tickets ($18; $15 students) may be purchased in advance here.

True story: Clay’s about to become a daddy. There’s a baby boy on his way. The due-date? No lie… October 31st. A Halloween baby. And Clay is scared. Really scared.

There’s nothing more petrifying than one’s own impending parenthood, especially with the clock tick-tick-ticking away—so we here at The Pumpkin Pie Show have decided to explore those fatherhood-fears and bring them to the stage. Every story within this year’s show focuses on the primal paranoia of parenting, whether it be mammoth diaper discharges, flying the friendly skies with screaming kids, or coming up with compelling ways to convince your children to eat their din-din… Not to mention sasquatch erotica, ancient mystical runes, and a special homemade recipe for Jesus juice.

This year’s Pumpkin Pie Show has it all. You’ve been warned. Parents can bring their babies to the show for free!* (*WARNING: Due to content, this show is not advised for anyone under the age of 16.)

It’s 10 years since we founded 1MPF! We’ve been a lot of places. We’ve made a lot of tiny plays. We’ve learned a lot about the world. Now: we’re going back to where it all started: The Brick Theater! We’ve gathered some of our original playwrights, closest collaborators, and long-time friends to do a “throwback” 1MPF, where we make the plays down n’ dirty, drink a lot of beer, and have some good old school indie theatre fun.

The One-Minute Play Festival (#1MPF) is America’s largest grass-roots community-engaged theatre festival, founded by Producing Artistic Director, Dominic D’Andrea. #1MPF is social barometer practice, which investigates local zeitgeist and narratives through dialogue, consensus building, and a performance of minute-long moments generated by each community. #1MPF works in partnership with traditional theatres, cultural institutions, and social justice institutions sharing educational, community-focused, or public service missions across the country. The aim is to create locally sourced community events, with the goal of promoting the spirit of radical inclusion. #1MPF includes participants of different points of age, race, culture, gender, socio-economic background, and stage of career. The work attempts to reflect the values, topics, trends, styles, ideas, and big conversations that bubble up to the surface in each community.

5/25: Write to Read Day

I'm gonna be the keynote speaker at the 2018 Write to Read Day! W2R Day is a conference-style event for middle schoolers to celebrate literacy, story telling, and self-expression. Held each May, Write to Read Day is now in its 6th year. The morning consists of a keynote presentation, opening ceremonies, and two break out sessions that students elect ahead of time. Each student has a customized schedule according to his or her interests. We hope Write to Read Day inspires our students to be curious, passionate readers, and that it helps them find creative modes of expression for their voices.

Author of the Tribe trilogy, Clay has published short story collections, novels, comics, screenplays, and the stage. His works have been adapted for the screen as shorts and a feature length film, and he created and wrote for the two decade long Pumpkin Pie Show storytelling sessions. Clay joins us courtesy of the Brooklyn Public Library to talk about his career behind the pen, and will run a creative writing workshop afterwards.

10/11: RVA: Book Talk w/ Clay McLeod Chapman

In a culture long obsessed with stories of the macabre, what price do we pay for all this storytelling? That is the question performance artist, screenwriter, and author Clay McLeod Chapman brilliantly explores in The Remaking (Quirk Books; October 8, 2019; $19.99), a supernatural thriller about a true-crime tale that takes on a life of its own. Inspired by the urban legend of The Witch Girl of Pilot’s Knob, Chapman reimagines the story of a single mother and her daughter who were burned at the stake as witches in a small town in Kentucky in 1916. In Chapman’s version, these women become Ella Louise and Jessica Ford, the inspiration for storytellers who seek to put their own stamp on their story, from a campfire tale to a B-horror movie to a meta slasher flick to a true-crime podcast. Richmond native Clay McLeod Chapman returns to his hometown for a book talk at the Edgar Allan Poe Museum in partnership with Chop Suey Books.

“The Criminal Villain: Finding the Motivation for Your Antagonist”

Panelists: Karen Abbott, Clay McLeod Chapman, Roger Johns, Moderator:

A well-crafted villain can seduce your readers, test their loyalties, and even appeal to their baser instincts. It begins and ends with motivation. Though villains can be diabolical, manipulative, vicious, bloodthirsty, and ruthless, they’re more intriguing for readers when they have a reason for their actions. Join our panel for a discussion on creating a believable and motivated antagonist that your readers may secretly (or not so secretly!) root for.

SUNDAY, OCT 18th: 10:30 – 11:30 AM

“Writing for Comics”

Panelists: Clay McLeod Chapman, Paul Jenkins, Chris Negron, Moderator:

Comic books are one of the fastest growing segments of the publishing industry. More
writers, established and new, are turning to comics and graphic novels to tell their
stories. But how is it done? What differences are there between comics and novels? And
once you’ve written a comic, where do you pitch it? Join Paul Jenkins, the legendary
author of Wolverine: Origin (as well as countless others!) and Clay McLeod Chapman,
author of Marvel’s Scream: Curse of Carnage for a discussion on the comic book
industry and some pointers on crafting a comic of your own!

SUNDAY, OCT 18th: 3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

“I Think We’re Alone Now: Battling the Impostor Syndrome”

Panelists: Ricki Cardenas, Clay McLeod Chapman, Paul Jenkins, Shelli R. Johannes, Kimberly Jones, Kris Spisak, Moderator

When do you feel comfortable admitting that you’re a writer? When will you give
yourself that label and feel like it fits? No matter what success a writer has, they tend to
be their own worst critics. But take a moment. Breathe. You’re not alone in your fears,
your insecurities, and your doubts. Listen as our panelists discuss how they have faced
and fought the ever-present demon of Imposter Syndrome.

4/1: Inside the Writers House

Be a part of the conversation! Get candid access to working writers from all over the country as Writers House instructor (and former bookstore owner) Alex Dawson talks craft (via video chat) with some of the year’s hottest pen pushers.

“Inside the Writers House” invites you into the homes, offices, and writing rooms of acclaimed authors, providing an inside eye on their working life and a level of intimacy often lacking in more formal settings. An obvious reference to the televised Actor’s Studio seminar, “Writers House” interviews are likewise craft focused, but strive for an earthy spontaneity unencumbered by prepared queries and index card cues. Visits are conversational and plastic, largely molded by (and dependent on) audience questions. In addition to the conversation, most visits include short readings, writing prompts, show-and-tell sessions, and house/apt tours. Chances are you’ll meet their pets.

In the last five years, students have visited with almost 200 authors in dozens of different cities. Internationally, they’ve talked with Eoin Colfer in Dublin, Mariana Enriquez in Buenos Aires, Yewande Omotoso in Johannesburg, Garth Greenwell in Sofia, Karin Tidbeck in Stockholm, Kevin Barry in Sligo, and Daisy Johnson in Oxford. Stateside, they’ve talked with Maurice Ruffin in New Orleans, Karen Russell in Portland, Chigozie Obioma in Lincoln, Tommy Orange in Oakland, Susan Orlean in Los Angeles, Tom Perrotta in Belmont, Jeff VanderMeer in Tallahassee, and Eowyn Ivey in Palmer, Alaska (as well as more local luminaries like Jennifer Egan, Victor LaValle, Lev Grossman, and André Aciman).

Books by IWH guests are available at the RU B&N (just look for the stepladder display bearing the IWH logo).

4/6: Whisper Down The Lane hits the shelves!

Whisper Down The Lane hits shelves April 6, 2021! Available wherever books are sold!

Inspired by the McMartin preschool trials and the Satanic Panic of the ‘80s, the critically acclaimed author of The Remaking delivers another pulse pounding, true-crime-based horror novel.

Richard doesn’t have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage to Tamara, a first chance at fatherhood to her son Elijah, and a quiet but pleasant life as an art teacher at Elijah’s elementary school in Danvers, Virginia. Then the body of a rabbit, ritualistically murdered, appears on the school grounds with a birthday card for Richard tucked beneath it. Richard doesn’t have a birthday—but Sean does . . .

Sean is a five-year-old boy who has just moved to Greenfield, Virginia, with his mother. Like most mothers of the 1980s, she’s worried about bills, childcare, putting food on the table . . . and an encroaching threat to American life that can take the face of anyone: a politician, a friendly neighbor, or even a teacher. When Sean’s school sends a letter to the parents revealing that Sean’s favorite teacher is under investigation, a white lie from Sean lights a fire that engulfs the entire nation—and Sean and his mother are left holding the match.

Now, thirty years later, someone is here to remind Richard that they remember what Sean did. And though Sean doesn’t exist anymore, someone needs to pay the price for his lies.

Clay McLeod Chapman’s live storytelling mind-frick THE PUMPKIN PIE SHOW has become a fan-favorite staple of our live CFF events for many years now, and it’s our supreme honor to bring the mad master storyteller back in 2022:

Inspired by a true story, this supernatural thriller is for fans of horror and true crime. In the 1930s, Ella Louise and her daughter Jessica are dragged from their home at the outskirts of Pilot’s Creek, Virginia, in the middle of the night. Ella Louise is accused of using her apothecary for witchcraft, and both are burned at the stake. Ella Louise’s burial site is never found, but the little girl has the most famous grave in the South: a steel-reinforced coffin surrounded by a fence of interconnected white crosses. Some wonder: If the mother was the witch, why is Jessica’s grave so tightly sealed?

THE SHINING - Saturday, October 29 at 6 PM

STANLEY KUBRICK’S DEFT SYMPHONY OF TERROR, PRESENTED IN 4K

An alcoholic, out-of-work teacher takes a job as the wintertime caretaker of a snowy resort. He brings his wife and young son with him. He wants to get some writing done. Things take a very dark turn…

THE SHINING is Stanley Kubrick’s chilling symphony of deft manipulation: Wendy Carlos’s score alternating with Ligeti compositions, Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall’s push-and-pull performances, and the omniscient Steadicam taking the whole thing in. THE SHINING transcends any trappings of paperback adaptation or genre exercise to become one of the most elementally terrifying works of art of the twentieth century.

Come lose yourself in its marvelous madness on the big screen – where it forever belongs. This 4K presentation of THE SHINING has been meticulously remastered and restored, sourced from the film’s original camera negative.

Nicholas Sparks meets The Empty Man in this modern Southern Gothic horror about a palm reader swept up in a disturbing missing-child case with a twist you won’t see coming.

After striking out on her own as a teen mom, Madi Price is forced to return to her hometown of Brandywine, Virginia, with her seventeen-year-old daughter. With nothing to her name, she scrapes together a living as a palm reader at the local farmers market.

It’s there that she connects with old high school flame Henry McCabe, now a reclusive local fisherman whose infant son, Skyler, went missing five years ago. Everyone in town is sure Skyler is dead, but when Madi reads Henry’s palm, she’s haunted by strange and disturbing visions that suggest otherwise. As she follows the thread of these visions, Madi discovers a terrifying nightmare waiting at the center of the labyrinth—and it’s coming for everyone she holds dear.

Combining supernatural horror with domestic suspense into a visceral exploration of parental grief, What Kind of Mother cements Clay McLeod Chapman’s reputation as a “star” (Vulture) and “the twenty-first century’s Richard Matheson” (Richard Chizmar, Chasing the Boogeyman).

Hole up in a huge (haunted?) cabin outside of town, with a wraparound porch and views of the sea, to write/workshop campfire stories with “horror-drunk storytelling virtuoso” (Time Out New York) Clay McLeod Chapman, which Esquire Magazine just credited with shaping “horror’s new Golden Age,” and Rutgers Creative Writing professor Alex Dawson.
