Thumbs Up from Kirkus for The Remaking!
Every author is terrified of Kirkus. Any author who says they aren’t is lying. Kirkus is tough. Really tough. So imagine how relieved, how elated, how downright gobsmacked I was with the glowing review The Remaking received today. Check it out:
“Horror on film is relatively easy: jump scares, gore, the occasional torture porn, and always the final girls. Horror in fiction is a little trickier, but occasionally you get something special like Mark Z. Danielewski’s puzzle box, House of Leaves (2000), John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Let the Right One In(2007), or, more recently, Josh Malerman’s runaway hit Bird Box (2014). Chapman’s (Nothing Untoward, 2017, etc.) spooky story solidly fits the mold of nothing you’ve ever read before. The book is divided into quarters, each entirely original yet always connected and deeply unnerving…
Something like Stephen King’s imperfect masterpiece The Shining (1977)... it’s a deeply eerie and evocative portrayal of what it’s like to stare into the abyss and find something there waiting for you.
A memorable, disquieting ghost story about stories, rendered inside a Möbius strip.”
Please etch this review on my tombstone. You can read the full review online here.

Cardiac Shadow review roundup
The recent run of The Cardiac Shadow co-produced by Northern Light Theatre and the Good Women Dance Collective in Edmonton has been receiving an over-whelming amount of raves. Here's what the critics say:
“The heart of humanity beats on in Northern Light Theatre production of Cardiac Shadow.” —Edmonton Journal
“Both visually mesmerizing and profoundly chilling, The Cardiac Shadow by Clay McLeod Chapman, provides viewers with an innovative approach to Holocaust narration… The modern minimalism of the production team is nothing short of masterful brilliance.” —Edmonton Jewish News
“An overarching story of the human spirit soaring above inconceivable torment. The ending comes as something of an unexpected metaphysical miracle. The final moments will stay with you for some time.” —Gig City
The Cardiac Shadow “shows humanity at our most horrible without any need for gruesome images or descriptions because it takes advantage of the most intricate theatre of all – the theatre of the mind.” —After The House Lights
“An elegantly artful little chamber piece. And the chamber in question is the mind, or more precisely the memory vault where the human mind can travel and warm itself when the present is too terrible to bear.” —12th Night
“Beautiful dance, music, theatre and film parallel the horrors of The Cardiac Shadow. Perhaps most chilling is the realization that similar savagery continues today 75 years after the Second World War. So where does that put us?” —St. Albert Gazette
“One of the edgiest plays Northern Light Theatre has ever produced.” —Playbot
Beyond the reviews, a few interiews/profiles popped up. Check them out:
“Insights into the Experience of Nazi Concentration Camps” - St. Albert Gazette
“Remembering the Women of Ravensbrück in The Cardiac Shadow” —After The House Lights
I couldn't be more proud of what Trevor Schmidt and his production team have put together. Congratulations, everyone! If you have a chance to check this show out, please do. Click here for dates and tickets for the show's run.

Lazaretto Review Roundup
The trade paperback for LAZARETTO came out this week, along with a whole new crop of rave reviews. Check out what the critics have been saying out our barfus opus:
Lazaretto has “some of the most terrifying things you will ever see in a comic… It is the most disturbing comic you will ever read.” Adventures In Poor Taste
“Unsettling, intense, nauseating, and ultimately “captivating”, Lazaretto spins its web-wide and well. But you need to be tough, with a strong will to withstand the full graphic wave of page after page of vividly rendered students, retching, turning into savages, and wreaking havoc all around. It’s colourful, this technocolour yawning of emotion, hate, and puke, all spilling onto everything.” Fanboy Factor
Lazaretto is “an absolutely terrifying psychological thriller.” The Comicon
Lazaretto is “a grotesque, hard hitting, horror story which gets under your skin, makes it crawl and finally makes you rip at it to remove it from your body.” Comic Cut Down
“Claustrophobic and disturbing.” Comic of the Week, Broken Frontier

“Macneill's screenplay (co-written by Clay McLeod Chapman) subtly fleshes out the tattered details responsible for Ted's mania with grimly poetic understatement worthy of Cormac McCarthy. ”
